2 years ago, we celebrated our 10 years with 5 anniversary eps entitled 10 by ten, where we asked 10 of our favorite artists to write an exclusive track for the occasion. two of the stand out tracks were martin iveson - aka atjazz - leave me here as well as art of tones, koniokola, which we thought deserved a second life. freerange and delusions of grandeur boss, jimpster, blesses us with his deep yet driving rendition of leave me here, while fred everything chooses to update koniokola with a more dance floor approach and a strip down dub. we also included the original of leave me here which was never available on vinyl.

recorded in a shaky makeshift chicken shack in rural maryland, link wray’s eponymous 1971 solo album is a compelling and forward-looking piece of honest, handmade americana. check !

after a run of club-ready 12”s, the fifth no bad days release slows the pace right down. on the views from my shed ep, long-standing friend of nbd james booth breaks in new alias the gardener with an easy-going record inspired by nature and sure to inspire relaxed, repeat listens.

„umwelt’s 12inch “… city” from 1999 was one of the most impressive 12inches i had at that time and i played the shit out of it. it was dark and very emotional, it was abstract but also driving at the same time. this was 1999 though, before discogs and before facebook and all the other platforms people have now to do research on artists they like and follow their work. at that time it was the record shop – and that was it. nobody knew this guy though, and i didn’t get my hands on any of the following releases, so in my world there was no follow-up to this record ever and i thought it would remain a one-off gem in my record box. until by some coincident i recently discovered he was still around and had actually released numerous releases in the meantime. i was very excited and contacted him straight away and ended up booking him for krake festival in the same year. undoubtedly his set was one of the best of the whole festival! he took the roof off the place with his mix of raw electro, industrial and rave and everybody was talking about it afterwards, saying it was the highlight of the festival! talking to him i learnt, that most of the tracks he played were his own, mostly unreleased. he produces without computers, all his tracks are single takes, there is no editing, no mixing afterwards, he only has a stereo track recording which is what it is. he owns a cutting machine which he uses to cut dubplates from his tracks, which he then plays out during his sets. this whole information about this very unique artistic approach just killed it for me, and since working with him was so nice as well, i asked him for a demo for killekill and its labels and was hoping for tracks i could make a great 12&#8243,, of. i got 14 tracks and after weeks of trying to pick the best, i finally realized i held one of the best electro albums ever in my hand – banging beats and the balls to go big and epic, subtle melodies, drama, funk – this album has got it all, and what’s most important, the music on it is the exact opposite of so much other music nowadays: it is emotional, it tells a story, it is easily recognizable and it is not interchangeable. it’s just umwelt.“ nico deuster

last days debut, sea told the story of one man s journey. now with his 5th album, seafaring , graham richardson returns to the sea to examine a range of vocations and exploits adrift. drawing inspiration from shipping routes, to ernest shackleton and his crew s ill-fated voyage on the endurance, to families being disjointed and reunited, seafaring goes some way to hint at what the oceans present to us. seafaring reflects on it s subject matter by coherently linking moments that are minimal and still, to those that are compelling and cinematic.

nach zwei gefeierten eps veröffentlicht jackson phillips a. k.a. day wave sein langerwartetes debütalbum the days we had. headcase aus dem jahr 2015 mit der durchbruch-single drag überzeugte sofort mit dem träumerischen surfpop, der nachfolger »hard to read« legte noch eine schippe drauf. inspiriert von den gesangsharmonien der beach boys auf der einen und den songstrukturen von joy division und den frühen new order auf der anderen seite, nahm der sänger und multiinstrumentalist die ersten skizzen ganz analog an gitarre, bass und schlagzeug auf.
jetzt folgt also die erste lange platte von phillips musikalischem soloprojekt. obwohl phillips sich selbst als seinen größten kritiker betitelt, hat er das album nur mit unterstützung des toningenieurs mark ranken fast im alleingang eingespielt und produziert. so entstanden elf wunderschöne songs mit gitarrenbasierter melodieführung und voller elektronischer tiefe und wärme. live wächst dieses soloprojekt zu einer band. zusammen mit seinen musikern erzeugt der kalifornier mit seiner weichen und gleichzeitig sehr eingängigen stimme und seinem lässigen charme eine zauberhafte stimmung. die melancholisch-melodiösen songs zünden sofort, wenn phillips und seine jungs auf der bühne stehen.

ever reliable canadian producer fred everything makes his first appearance of 2017 with a selection of choice remixes of house classics for the lazy days label. on the a-side he s taking to crazy p s -like a fool- a vocal and dub version and laying down a slick, bubbling groover that fits perfectly with the original s warm, disco-infused elements. on the flip, he takes on roach motel s -the night- and makes it into a shimmering nocturnal cut peppered with impeccable synth lines and a sleazy vocal turn. by way of variety the final track sees fred create a laid back balearic, auto-tuned version of franky selector s -wind swept dune-.

days of being wild continues their collaboration with berlin based french producer franz matthews, releasing his first solo ep, the spacey, cosmic ostkreuz. half of the duo languages, whose 1st ep the label released at the end of last year, franz matthews explores a very different sound on his first solo effort, all space disco, retro synths and funky guitars out. title track ostkreuz has been road tested by the days of being wild crew on dance floors all around europe all of last year and has created euphoria and anticipation in equal measure. this is a cosmic hit from outer space, all constructed around well known ingredients that thanks to franz matthews musical and melodic talent rise here to epic heights. the b-side guns of rixdorf is another devastating peak time tune. while remaining in the same vein as ostkreuz, it feels more high energy with its irresistible funky guitars calling and responding over a driving bass. days of being wild always try to pair producers with remixers that will shed a new light on their work. its no exception with ostkreuz, who gets the reinvention treatment from no other than moscoman and rodion aka the claydermans. the cosmic vibe is still here hovering on top in the opening chords of the remix, but soon enough a sub, housier bass makes its way in the mix and wont let you go until the end. carried by shuffling claps and a bouncier beat, the groove here is totally re-invented, taking ostkreuz from peak time to the darker edges of after land.

review ornate music continues in its mission to reach out to the freshest talent in the house and techno scene by shining a light on emergent german talent faune, following last years stellar releases by ka one & st-sene and homepark. thus far, jakob panthels production as faune has been spotted on the soundscape versions label, while under his own name he has produced two albums released digitally on crystalline days. most recently, he delivered the four-track isvatten ep to tuesday slump, which operates out of his native munich. as well as his rising release schedule, he has been appearing frequently on the circuit in munich and berlin, performing alongside the likes of a made up sound, stefan jòs and skudge. on this ep panthel delivers three tracks of deep, hardware-powered techno with a keen dancefloor instinct, fitting right in to the ethos of ornate and marking another step forward for faune.

a simple walk in the park on the ways of the city, with a big coffee, waiting for the tram. simple choices, simple pleasures, tram days ep is the second release of aquaphresca. following the first established routine, chopped, arranged, smooth rhythm, you will probably recognize it immediately. music will always find its way, more like .. people. two long awaited eclectic jams on repeat!

in the summer of 2016 hove went to france for two weeks to start writing and recording his new ep portes du soleil. together with his girlfriend they spent two weeks at le pascalet, a house in the woods of the cevennes, right outside the small village of st. etienne vallee franc&#807,,,aise. equipped with a sampler, a drum-machine,some synths, effect pedals and a mic for feld- recordings, he built the foundation of the 4 songs that would later become the ep portes du soleil. all the songs started out as live-jams. the goal was to create different moods and patterns inspired by the surroundings of the forest, long walks, playing petanque and plenty of pastis. the tracks were later fnalized back home at hoves studio in zurich. musically portes du soleil feels like the natural follow up to his debut ep journey to arendal. hoves tracks are wavering between sozzled grooves and warm, woozy atmospheres. field- recordings from their daily routine in and around the house were either used to enrich the ambiance, or as in calme infni, they were transformed into a whole song. even though portes du soleil was written during the summer, the record is not bound to any season it is simply an excerpt of hoves life in 2016.

z lovecraft brings dubbed out bliss, rivieria percussion and 80’s curb stomping beats to the table with his the creator ep. as well as being part of the team that runs rhythm section, z lovecraft works at yam records, has a cat called mrs. sohi and a dog called frank.

bitten is amsterdam s hot techno imprint with 2000 and one and sandy huner at the forefront. for this release we welcome back raul mezcolanza and khat. this time the duo deliver two warm and groovy techno tracks inspired by the sound of detroit, synths, vocals and a dancefloor driven grooves are the key ingredients for this release.

no bad days is back for round 2. ‘in the galleria’ slides in with dreamlike pads and a real euphoric feel to the whole track. just right for those balearic sunsets. second on the a side is ‘celestial bodies’ - a melodic freestyle jam that makes us feel like we’re down at the arcade playing ‘out run’ on a dusty mega drive.
over to the flip we start off with the title track, ‘lunar waves’ beginning with a tougher feel it hints at a hardware acid workout... but half way in roberto hits you with those dreamy pads again and just has us in his hands for that synth solo at the end! rounding off the ep perfectly is ‘when u come around’, a real ‘end of summer sitting down at the park with your mates’ kind of track...mmm...

quality house label fina records are back with their next carefully curated ep of 2016. this one comes from the choice house duo of rob glassett and sam fussell aka homepark, who serve up four more of their finely crafted cuts. over the last six years, homepark have slowly but surely built up a classy discography that takes in smooth and seductive deep house that has real drive. it has come on labels like ornate music and chez damiers courtesy of balance recordings, and always marries a classic sense of house history with fresh new perspectives for both head and heel.

argy s these days label is an occasional treat in the world of stripped down tech house, and it makes its first appearance for 2016 with a selection of club-ready remixes from the label boss, tackling various productions from german techno mainstay paul brtschitsch. the -floor adaptation- of -green- heads into subterranean pastures, albeit with a powerful beat propelling it, and -eternal aspects- maintains that underground mood with a warmer synth repertoire. on the more flamboyant b-side, -squeezed- takes on a wild old-skool quality perfect for more fiery moments on the floor before -subbass- continues the jacking theme in fine style.
